Do you know the difference between Christianity and superstition? You probably do, but many people do not. There are a number of people in the world who have some very strange beliefs and ideas that they call Christian, but which are really just superstitious practices.

First of all, let’s look at what Christianity actually is. It is a religion centered on Jesus Christ: His life, teachings, death, and resurrection. It’s not simply about belonging to an organization with a sign on or in front of the building that says it is a church. It’s more about having a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Superstition, on the other hand, is the belief that certain objects, actions, words, numbers, or rituals have some special spiritual power.

Over the centuries, the two have become one and the same for many people. Without realizing it, many people have taken their Christian beliefs and ideas into a whole new dimension, until Christianity becomes little more than superstitious mumbo jumbo.

Let’s use the Bible as an example. What we now call the Holy Bible and think of as one book is actually a collection of many writings that were accumulated over time. They were written by numerous authors, in different places, for specific reasons and for specific audiences in their own time. Today, many people call it the Word of God and refer to it as a Holy Book.

Some people take that even further and believe that it is good luck simply to have a Bible in their possession. Others may think certain verses have some kind of magical power and can be used in incantations or rituals.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of the Bible. I like to read it daily, and I try my best to live by it. But the Bible itself calls Jesus the Word of God. So, to me, it seems that calling the Bible itself “the Word of God” can sometimes blur an important distinction, and could even become a form of idolatry. I’m guilty of using that expression myself from time to time.

The Bible is important to me, but I don’t want the book to take the place of the One the book points us toward.

So I try to keep Jesus at the center of my life and my ministry. I don’t want to slip into superstition. I want to keep my Christianity as simple and as pure as possible, with Jesus Christ at the center of it all.
